Let me tell you a little bit about me:

First and foremost, I’m a wife of 10+ years to Paul and a mama to two super active little boys, Ethan and Eli. I’m also a dog mama to Reesie Rose, our chocolate golden doodle and Mable, our newest doodle pup.

I am a 3-way Enneagram tie–taken it several times, keep coming up with the same three, equally, with a 4th close behind. Every time. I suppose that makes this next part make more sense…

I’m a trained attorney with a business degree who helps small business owners and content creators with the design of their business as well as a self-taught interior designer who designs spaces for people all over the country and writes about the design of my life here.

I am someone who finds both the function and the aesthetics of (insert everything I do here) to be equally important.

This is as true with designing and running a business as it is in interior design. I want my business to run as seamlessly as possible, be designed intelligently and intentionally, be represented as completely and beautifully in its marketing and online presence, and be at the forefront in technological advancements so I can reach my community right where they are.

Lawyer (noun): a person who writes a 10,000 word document and calls it “brief.”

Where DYB Began

I started law school knowing I wanted to help people and I thought I’d go into family law. Then a family law judge I had as a professor told me not to start there because the burn out was high. So, I started my career at the VA working in appellate administrative law for our Veterans.

After my second son was born, I ended up with severe postpartum depression and anxiety, off work for longer than I had planned, and I got myself back on my feet one home project at a time. I started to share my projects on social media and my blog, met some of my best friends through that process, and started attending conferences and retreats, learning about this industry.

While at Haven Conference in 2022, my mentor asked me a question regarding legal entities during her tax course and she explained that I was an attorney.

After that class finished, I was flooded with people asking a very wide range of questions. I realized just how much need there was for information and education on how to establish and operate a small business, particularly in what I call “the Wild West” of online content creation and service providers. Still, it wasn’t until I had a severe bout of long COVID that I began to reconsider where I was going in my career.

My friends started to ask me to help them with their privacy policies or to explain phrases in contracts they received from brands. They suggested that I find a way to get that information out to more people and Design of Your Business was born.

The correct application of any law is dependent on the specific facts and jurisdiction of the situation. Therefore, the information I provide can serve only as a foundation of the information and education necessary to understand any legal matter. It CANNOT serve as legal advice for your specific situation. I am an attorney, but not YOUR attorney. I provide legal information and education, not legal advice or counsel. You must always consult your own attorney licensed in your jurisdiction, familiar with the specific facts of your case, for legal advice and never solely rely on information I provide. Unless we’ve discussed your situation at length and signed a legal contract outlining my representation in your case, there is no attorney client relationship created by any information or educational resources I provide.

Frequently Asked Questions:

I’ve purchased your products and/or consumed your information/education. Are you my attorney?

No. There is nothing in my products, service, or information that establishes an attorney-client relationship. First, I can only represent people in the state/jurisdiction in which I am licensed and right now, I do not take on clients to represent individually. I provide information and education so that you can better understand the legal landscape and know more of what to ask an attorney that you hire in your area. Can you be my attorney?

In short, no. I can only represent people in the state/jurisdiction in which I am licensed and right now, I do not take on clients to represent individually. I provide information and education so that you can better understand the legal landscape and know more of what to ask your attorney you hire in your area.

Can I take any of your legal templates and use them without having an attorney look them over?

It is possible that using a template I sell on its own, without additional attorney review, could work sufficiently in your legal situation. However, like I say to my boys all of the time, just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. My templates are a great starting point and should help you understand the topic(s) at hand. Much of the law surrounding things such as business entity formation, privacy policy law, and common contract language is fairly standardized or similar from state to state, so there’s a chance that much of the template will be sufficient for your situation. However, there is no way to be sure that any template you purchase is legally sufficient without having an attorney in your jurisdiction and familiar with your business/situation check it out. The good news is, it should be FAR CHEAPER to purchase a template from me and have your attorney look it over than to pay them to draft it from scratch.

Why should I purchase a template from you when I still need an attorney to look it over?

It should be FAR CHEAPER to purchase a template from me, fill it in, and have your attorney review it than to pay them to draft it from scratch. Plus, my templates provide a significant amount of information to explain each part of the template, so you can understand what it all means, know what to ask your attorney, and be able to better understand their answers.
